Motion of the Earth

Time : 10 minutes

Activity 1 :

Why do we have day and night? Think and discuss with your friend over phone or parents and share in the WhatsApp group with your teacher.

Activity 2 :

Take a circular paper and put a stick in the middle of the paper and put it in an open place under the sun. Throughout the day observe the shadow of the stick and mark the shadow of different interval of time in that paper. Can you see the variations of size and places of the shadows in different interval of time? Try to find out the reason behind this variation and write in your copy.
Students will record the timings of sunrise and sunset of their places on 21st of past three or four months by taking the help of newspaper or Google.

Activity 3 :

Students will watch a video on YouTube to understand how earth rotates on its axis and day and night occur. – Students will watch a video on revolution of earth to understand the variations of duration of day and night as well as about the changing seasons with changing position of the earth during revolution. Or, they can find out how earth rotates on its axis, how day and night occur from different resources such as books, internet or ask teachers, parents and answer the above questions.

Activity 4 :
Students will read the chapter from their textbook. They will draw an ellipse in their copy to understand the nature of earth’s orbit by taking the help of textbook activity or they can search on Google.

Time : 60 minutes

Assessment:

Student will think about crops and seasonal fruits, vegetables that they eat and see in market and make a list of crops as per the season. They will also include in which states of India has the highest production of the crops they have listed.
Students will find out the answer of the following questions:
– Why does the sun not rise in the north and set in the south?
– What will happen if the earth stops rotating?
– What are the other effects on nature due to rotation?
As you have learnt that the seasons in the Northern hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Southern hemisphere. So, when we are having winter season, some countries have summer season.
Do you know that Christmas is celebrated in Australia in the summer season?
Make a list of ten countries and write the name of season they celebrate Christmas day.
